Agnieszka got into the red group with Maria Sharapova, Simona Halep and Flavia Pennetta. Agnieszka lost the first two group stage matches – she won a set with Sharapova. The situation was very complicated – in order to stand a chance of qualifying for the semi-finals Agnieszka had to defeat Simona Halep without losing a set, and count on the Russian’s win in the duel with the Italian.
In the match with Halep, Agnieszka played an out of this world game, putting everything at stake. Although during the tie-break she was losing 1:5 – she won the set 7:6 (5), and in the second part of the match, she did not give the Romanian even the slightest chance, giving away only one gem. Sharapova’s victory over Pennetta contributed to her advance to the semi-final.
In the semi-final, she played Garbine Muguruza. It was a heroic three-set fight. Both players presented great tennis, they were showing off spectacular plays, and they both deserved a place in the final of the tournament. Agnieszka handled the rigors of the match better, and won 6:7, 6:3, 7:5. In the fans’ vote, this match was chosen the favorite WTA Match of the Year.
For the victory in the tournament Agnieszka fought with Petra Kvitova. It was yet another spectacular encounter, and three more sets to play. Both players not only fought with the rival, but they also struggled with exhaustion and pain – both of them appeared on the court with bandaged thighs. After the won match ball it was Aga who could rejoice in winning the title and could celebrate the 6:2, 4:6, 6:3 victory. The moment, in which Agnieszka, after the last ball in the tournament, clenched her fist and covered her face with her hand will live on long in the memory of both the fans and the whole tennis world.
For the first time in her career, Aga in the course of four days defeated three players from the TOP5! By winning in Singapore, Agnieszka acquired the greatest trophy in her career. It is also the greatest success in the history of Polish tennis.
